General aim(s):Pupils should get familiar with the field of genetic engineering and they should develop and formulate an own opinion on genetic engineering, especially "designer baby".

PROCEDURE/PROCESS

1. Pre-Task / Preparation

"Play a game" Motivation: Pupils play the game "Design your own designer baby" to get an introduction to the topic
Voting "Are you for or against genetic engineering" Pupils should give their general opinion about the topic. In the end there will be the same question to see, if their opinion has changed during the course. 
Pupils get a definition of "genetic engineering" from wikipedia and are asked to read it.After reading they have to solve a quiz. Introduction of new technical vocabulary. By solving the quiz the teacher can check, if the pupils have understood the definition and are able to use the new words.

Text "Designer baby will be created before 2030" with grammar gaps. Gapfilling activity to reactivate the pupils` knowledge about the different tenses
Complete text "Designer baby will be...", after reading the whole text, the pupils are asked to answer the questions below. Overview about the future development of genetic engineering. Pupils have to use the new vocabulary, introduced in the pre-task and by the text. Puipls have to understand the whole text to solve the tasks.

Reading text "Adam Nash" in regard to the advantages and disadvantages of genetic engineering Reading comprehension and preparation for the following discussion.
Discussion about advantages and disadvantages of genetic engineering in the forum. Writing skills and formulation of their own opinion.
Final voting "for or against". Formulating the own opinion after learning a lot about the field of genetic engineering.
Final questions "Why are you for or against genetic engineering? Has your opinion changed during the course?"  Writing skills. Reflection of new knowledge.
